The above is the approximate relative positions of the

two vessels when I found it necessary to put my helm over.

If I had not put my helm over there would have been a

collision.

Sworn.

I am a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy serving

at present in the Naval Dockyard. On Sunday July 26th

I was in the yacht Tavy II at the wheel. The yacht was then in a position about 11⁄2 miles 270° from

Half way Point. We were running free with the wind

dead aft on a course about NNW. Force of wind 45

weather clear. We sighted a steam vessel on the

starboard bow about 5 miles away. Hercourse appeared

to be about west. I watched her very carefully as her

bearing did not alter so far as I could see. When she

was about half a mile away she appeared to alter course slightly to starboard and again about quarter of a mile away. In each case making no sound signal. With her bridge dead ahead at about ten minutes past eleven A.M. at a distance of about 100 feet I considered that

a collision was inevitable if we held on our course and

I put the helm hard astarboard and jibed the main boom

a rather unpleasant proceeding this avoided a

collision.

Commander Newill and Commander Docksey were

with me.
